Mäertchen - Traditional market on the occasion of the Octave
The "Mäertchen" originates from the Octave, a religious festival honoring the Virgin Mary, patron saint of the city and the Grand Duchy, during which pilgrims from all over the country and the Greater Region travel to Luxembourg City. Initially, the Octave lasted eight days (hence its name); today it spans two weeks between Easter and Pentecost, beginning on the third Saturday after Easter.
Originally, the "Mäertchen" offered pilgrims in a state of fasting, most of whom came from rural backgrounds and rarely went to the city, the opportunity to have a small snack while doing their shopping in town, right after leaving mass.
Although the "Mäertchen" has now taken on the appearance of a popular market with its game stalls and fairground attractions, it has by no means lost its charm and appeal. Every year, thousands of visitors flock there to enjoy the friendly atmosphere that fills the city center during the 16 days of the "Mäertchen".
Good to know
This year, visitors will find around fifty food stalls, arranged around a central covered terrace of more than 1000 m2, as well as game stalls and fairground attractions, creating a welcoming and friendly atmosphere.
