The development of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly generative AI, is closely linked to the collection, processing, and large-scale training of data. Sometimes referred to as "the new oil," these datasets have created significant economic value and power for major tech companies. However, these companies are not the only ones collecting data from users’ digital interactions: governments, research institutions, and industries also rely on large amounts of data to improve their administrative, scientific, or commercial systems and services.

What has changed in recent years is how the availability of “big data” has fueled the development of new algorithms now used to train generative AI. Instead of simply predicting patterns or behaviors, these systems learn to generate ‘new’ content. However, they are not always able to distinguish between reliable and questionable information, or between fact and opinion. With their increasing presence in our homes, workplaces, and public spaces, how can we prevent confusion between information and disinformation?

The third TASTE talk aims to critically and playfully unpack the mechanisms, structures, and risks that these “black boxes” may pose to our democratic societies.

In this new series of talks, scientists, artists, and stakeholders from the cultural and creative sectors share their experiences and the impact of transdisciplinary projects. These events aim to provide insight, inspire dialogue, and foster societal change.
