We begin in Italy with Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who takes us to Verona, the city of the famous star-crossed lovers. The Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, for his part, had an anonymous patron, a certain Mr. X, who sent him, all expenses paid, to Venice to broaden his horizons and find inspiration for his Symphony No. 2. Then, head northwest to the French Atlantic coast, where Sergei Prokofiev completed his Piano Concerto No. 3, a work of legendary difficulty that Beatrice Rana, our Artist in Focus this season, does not shy away from tackling.
