Literary Monday - Tobias Schlegl "Leichtes Herz und schwere Beine"
Tobias Schlegl walks the Camino de Santiago with his 73-year-old mother. Although he is not a fan of hiking, he embarks on this journey to fulfill her long-held wish. Apart from her role as a mother, he realizes he knows little about her. On the Camino, he asks questions he has long wanted to ask, and gets to know her in a new way. Schlegl tells of newly found closeness, dealing with grief, and nights spent in noisy dormitories. This book highlights the importance of spending time with one's parents as adults, before they become too old and frail. Schlegl’s experience shows it's worthwhile to go on an adventure together.
Tobias Schlegl, born in 1977, was a longtime presenter on the music channel Viva, then on the satirical show Extra 3, and the cultural magazine aspekte. He gave up most of his TV jobs in 2016 to train as a paramedic. He wrote about this profession in his novel "Schockraum" (2020), which became a Spiegel bestseller. In 2022, he published "SEE.NOT.RETTUNG." (Piper), an account of his rescue mission in the Mediterranean aboard the rescue ship Sea-Eye 4. In September 2023, his new novel "Strom" (Piper) appeared, a moving story about helping, helplessness, care, power, and the value of life.
