Conference: "I'm not taking sides. I'm just taking pictures."
War journalists hold a special place in cinema: they are both witnesses and actors, shaping the very conflicts they claim to simply document. Since the 1970s, cinema has frequently addressed this tension, developing a unique mythology around the war reporter, from the heroic image-seeker to the morally torn chronicler. Through films such as Professione: Reporter (1975), The Killing Fields (1984), Salvador (1986), Under Fire (1983), Die Fälschung (1981), Welcome to Sarajevo (1997), and Civil War (2024), the conference will examine how cinema explores the ethical and existential challenges of war journalism. Finally, it will look at contemporary documentaries like 20 Days in Mariupol (2023) and No Other Land (2024), questioning the boundary between observation and intervention. The talk will use film clips to illustrate these topics.
