A practical 4-week course exploring color mixing, harmony, observation and atmosphere through guided exercises and color studies led by artist Alvira Ferreira.

Color is one of the most expressive—and often most complex—aspects of artistic creation. Through my years of experience as an artist and art restorer, precision and observation of color have become essential to my practice. In restoration, in particular, the slightest change in tone, temperature, saturation, or value can radically alter the result, demanding a highly trained eye for color blending and harmony.

This course aims to help students better understand how colors interact, change, neutralize, harmonize, and create atmosphere through practical experimentation and observation.

Rather than using premixed colors straight from the tube, students will learn to intentionally mix and control colors through hands-on exercises focused on harmony, temperature, value, saturation, and atmosphere, using a limited palette.

Although the demonstrations and exercises throughout the course primarily use paint, the principles explored apply to a variety of artistic media, including painting, colored pencils, pastels, illustration, mixed media, and much more.

The topics covered throughout the course include:

mixing of colors and relationships between colors

primary, secondary and complementary colors

warm and cool color temperature

harmony, contrast and balance

saturation and muted color

colored shadows and reflected light

Color matching by observation

create an atmosphere through palette choices

working with limited palettes

Suitable for beginner and intermediate artists.
