Germaine Acogny & Gregory Maqoma
- theater
Two emblematic choreographers from the African continent, Franco-Beninese Germaine Acogny, an icon of contemporary dance, and South African Gregory Maqoma, came together to celebrate memory, interconnectedness and dignity through dance in a powerful two-part performance. In Joséphine, Germaine Acogny pays a vibrant tribute to the singer, dancer and activist Josephine Baker by evoking an electrifying dialogue between two women who question the colonial gaze, resistance and the reinvention of the self. Gregory Maqoma responds to this first part with his piece Bantu – whose root means “human being” –, bringing together dancers from Senegal’s École des Sables and from his own company, Vuyani Dance Theatre, around a choreographic transposition of the body as archive and movement as testimony.
