THEY live together in their 50-square-metre apartment equipped with a click machine, without a balcony. She has a constant companion: fear. She is afraid of everything that awaits her outside the apartment: noise, traffic and any form of human interaction. He dreams of having a child with her, his second, whom he sincerely wishes to take responsibility for. Their only connection to the outside world: waiting for the Telekom technician, the Amazon parcel at the front door and the monthly appointments with Max, her osteopath. The couple thus attempts to escape the reassuring desert of their four walls with the help of a role-playing game — and it quickly becomes clear that the boundary between reality and fiction is becoming increasingly blurred. For an initially innocuous attempt to get tattooed in their own living room ultimately leads to a heated confrontation about questions of privilege, social class and the apparent incompatibility of their respective biographies. And when everything finally seems to have been reduced to ruins, Mrs Hunzen, a state-certified expert in miracles, emerges from nowhere and brings their uninhibited intimacy to an end through her very robust nature. In doing so, a glimmer of hope suddenly emerges from the couple’s hitherto desperate conflict — a glimmer that may well justify the existence of a romantic relationship between two people after all. In “Of Wounds and Wonders”, Sarah Kilter casts a gaze full of biting humour and keen powers of observation on the abyss of a normality that circles ever more tightly around a misfortune refusing to disappear — but above all around itself. Sarah Kilter was born in Berlin in 1994 to an Algerian father and a German mother. From 2016 to 2020, she studied playwriting at the Berlin University of the Arts. Since graduating, she has worked as a freelance writer for theatre and radio fiction, as well as a screenwriter for film and television. In 2020, she was voted Germany’s young playwright of the year.
