Cheung plays Yuddy, a charismatic but deeply troubled young man – some would say a seducer – who sets out in search of his biological mother. His emotional detachment leaves a lasting mark on the lives of those who cross his path. Through his journey, the film explores themes such as loneliness, identity and unfulfilled desire. This early film by Wong Kar Wai, part of an informal trilogy that also includes In the Mood for Love, lays the groundwork for the themes and aesthetic that would define the director’s career and gives Cheung one of his most memorable roles.
