Toxic masculinity and the manosphere

The integration of men and boys into gender equality and diversity policies is now discussed at both national and international levels, in relation to strategies against gender-based discrimination and violence. 'Toxic masculinity' refers to a set of cultural and social norms that define how a man should behave, potentially manifesting as attitudes that disparage women, homophobia, aggressiveness, or a refusal to show any form of vulnerability or empathy. A related concept is the 'manosphere,' which refers to Internet and social media spaces where the 'natural order of the sexes' and dominant masculinity are defended. The conference will address these concepts, their implications for gender relations, social cohesion, and will discuss related issues concerning equality, diversity, and the prevention of discrimination.
