A man stands alone on stage – and yet this Faust is anything but lonely. With each change of role, the boundaries blur between scholar, tempter, and the driven, until the evening's title becomes almost literal: Herr Teufel Faust. In this one figure, Dominique Horwitz brings together Goethe's characters – above all Faust, who longs to know more, experience more, and absorb more of the world, until he realizes too late what this hunger costs him. For his pact with the devil forbids exactly what he desires most: to linger in the moment. Torsten Fischer condenses the classic into a solo performance, where the devil is not a distant figure, but an inner impulse: a drive that pushes further and further with no escape. Thus emerges a Faust who does not guard Goethe’s text with reverence, but sets it in motion: physical, alert, restless – and close to a present that has forgotten how to pause.
