The new novel is set in the fictional village of “Schëldref”. At the centre of “Spawecken” is a tree, the Ampeljong, an old nut tree. Little Karel falls out of the tree one day and gets caught in a large spider’s web, he says. At the age of seventeen, another misfortune occurs that completely changes his life. In 1988, lightning strikes the nut tree, leading to an unexpected discovery. Could it be that the Ampeljong’s roots reach back to the Thirty Years’ War, one of the darkest periods in history?
