VidéoMania is a student documentary about the growing deployment of surveillance cameras in public and publicly accessible spaces. The project explores the political dimension of these cameras by questioning the apparent self-evidence of their use. From the Ministry of the Interior to rural town halls, it documents the decisions that led to cameras being installed on the walls and poles of municipalities. Discreet and little known to the public, these cameras raise debates about individual freedoms and their actual effectiveness within the security apparatus. In Metz, more than 1,000 video feeds are now sent to the supervision centre: has video surveillance become indispensable, or is its expansion justified by its effectiveness in fighting crime?
