Sorry, I'm Speaking is an exhibition dedicated to the main authors of contemporary autobiographical comics in Spanish. It is based on the famous feminist slogan: "the personal is political" (Hanisch, 1969), which asserts that the problems considered "personal" that women suffer (sexism, domestic violence, responsibility for raising children or keeping a home, lower wages, and other gender-related issues) are systemic and political problems, which can only be addressed through collective effort. The themes and styles of the works on display are varied, as are the authors' professional backgrounds. All, however, share the same intention: to talk about their lives.
When selecting the works, we tried to cover themes that provide a realistic view of prevailing political issues with a view to positive social change and are narrated by the authors through their own life experiences. These themes include: testimonies of the LGBTQI community, class conflict, xenophobia, misogynistic violence, mental health, immigration, working conditions, family and historical trauma, emotional space, couples, family, friendship, and the creative process. The exhibition is a modest presentation limited to 35 authors working in Spanish. It was not possible to include all the artists we would have liked. Autobiographical comics bring together many authors from different backgrounds, themes, and styles, and we invite the public to read and research this topic.
Good to know
The exhibition features 35 Spanish-speaking women authors, exploring diverse narratives to encourage constructive social reflection. Visitors are invited to discover more by exploring these stories and themes.
