Does aesthetics always have to be beautiful? Or is the appeal of ugliness also an aesthetic experience? Not only do horror films emphasize that the terrible and the disgusting can attract us equally – but where does this affinity come from, and above all, what is ugliness? According to the Rosenkranz, ugliness appears in three areas: in nature, in man and in art. We will deal with these forms, about decay and ideal
speak and also bring into play the relationship to evil and hatred. Disgust, on the other hand, often symbolizes "too much" and "too close", and represents a feeling that actually provides an aesthetic moment from within us. That fascist regimes, among others, use the aesthetic connotation of something disgusting to carry out their propaganda is one of the high points of inhumanity.
But even in the Bible, evil has acquired its own aesthetics, which are fed and carried forward by the narrative. Horror literature, and the film Blair Witch Project, for example, masterfully manipulates the imagination of the reader or viewer – how can this be analyzed philosophically?
