Guillermo’s Ghosts: The Early Films of Guillermo del Toro
On the occasion of the release of Guillermo del Toro’s highly anticipated adaptation, the Cinémathèque delves into the early Spanish-language part of the Mexican director’s filmography, also featuring a showing of Universal’s 1931 iconic adaptation as a bonus.
Early works like 'El espinazo del diablo' and 'El laberinto del fauno' explore themes of the supernatural and history, using ghostly figures to reflect trauma and memory. These films highlight his unique approach to spectral figures, embedding them in narratives imbued with memory, loss, and historical presence.
