Concert - Contretemps
When the carefree frivolity of courtly entertainments is merely a façade for certain artists with a sharp political awareness, the result is music that is as beautiful as it is biting. Among those who challenged the established order was Haydn, who, as an act of protest addressed to Duke Esterházy, asked his musicians to leave their stands one by one during the performance of his Symphony No. 45. Likewise, Couperin, in the midst of the quarrel between the French and Italian schools, drew inspiration from both, while subtly continuing to make the court of the Sun King dance. And if Ravel and Adès delight in travelling back in time to reinterpret some of his works, it is because they grasped the incisiveness of his music before blending its character with more contemporary colours. Sometimes, a simple offbeat brings music and dance together across the ages…!
