TerraForma immerses you in the fascinating history of Ascension Island, an isolated volcanic islet in the heart of the South Atlantic. Appearing a little over a million years ago, long nicknamed "the island of ashes", it was almost devoid of life when humans arrived.
Discovered in 1503 and occupied by the British in 1815, the island became the site of an ambitious ecological experiment in the 19th century. Inspired by Charles Darwin, botanist Joseph Hooker transformed the barren summit of Green Mountain into a lush garden in 1847. Eucalyptus, bamboo, Norfolk pines: an artificial ecosystem was born, a symbol of Victorian terraforming and imperial power.
But behind this verdant landscape lie unexpected consequences. TerraForma thus questions geoengineering, the transformation of planets, and our definition of "nature".
A captivating exploration at the intersection of history, ecology, politics, and design.
