For several decades, most wealthy countries have increased access to secondary and higher education for growing numbers of young people. This expansion was motivated by promises of justice, human capital, and democracy. However, these promises now face paradoxical and often negative effects: increasing and ranking of educational offerings, accentuation of unequal family strategies, widening differences in the value of diplomas, marginalization of those without degrees, and a widespread sense of downward mobility. Ultimately, the dominance of academic achievement creates winners and losers, which can foster mistrust in the democratic values promoted by education.
