"All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way"—the famous opening line of Tolstoy's seminal novel Anna Karenina immediately sets the tone. Anna, a young mother living in St. Petersburg, leads an apparently carefree life with her husband but is not truly happy. When the charming Count Wronsky enters her life, she falls for him unconditionally, sacrificing her husband (who refuses a divorce), her son, and the respect of society. Soon, feeling misunderstood even by Wronsky, Anna’s great love story turns into a downward spiral of jealousy, hatred and self-destruction, leading her to make her fatal decision. In this masterpiece, Tolstoy paints a panorama of striking characters, each embodying the impossible possibilities of human beings and love. This new stage adaptation by Frank Hoffmann, staged in a vast space imagined by German artist Ben Willikens, brings the 19th-century Russian novel to life in a way that is both timely and timeless.
