“All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way” — the famous first sentence of Tolstoy’s epic novel Anna Karenina immediately exposes the wound. The young mother Anna leads a seemingly carefree life in St. Petersburg with her husband. She appears to have everything needed for happiness — yet she is not happy. When the charming Count Wronskij, in many ways the opposite of her husband, enters her life, she falls for him in unconditional love. With her open commitment to Wronskij, Anna quickly gives up everything that defined her life: her husband, who refuses to grant a divorce, her son, and the respect of society. But soon Anna also feels misunderstood by the Count. What began as the “Greatest Love of All” rapidly becomes a vortex of jealousy, hatred, and self-destruction. With the same determination that led her to love, Anna chooses death.
Besides Anna, her husband and her lover, Tolstoy’s multi-layered work Anna Karenina unfolds into a true panorama of wonderfully complex characters, each showing in their own way the impossible possibilities of being human and the complex nature of love and relationships.
In a new stage adaptation, director Frank Hoffmann and a brilliant ensemble bring Tolstoy’s masterpiece to life in a wide stage space designed by German painter Ben Willikens.
