The City Is Coming to Erase It All is Fink’s ninth studio album, following 2024’s Beauty In Your Wake. Recorded in Zennor, Cornwall, the album was created with a strict era-specific approach, inspired by a record Michael Chapman might have made, down to the guitar strings. Grammy-winning producer Sam Okell guided the process: “If it didn’t exist in 1974, you’re not allowed to use it.” However, this is about nowstalgia, not nostalgia. Singer Fin Greenall says he wanted something new but with the same ethos. There is a parallel between the restless 18-year-olds Fink once were and the family men they are now. Touring remains both a compulsion and a joy, with the need to play new material overwhelming any comforts. City is a result of this hunger for discovery and a love for the album as a format, like in 1974. Its cover reflects the album’s content: the first song is a greeting, the instrumental closer a conclusion. It is a story—a record for curious people ready to face a little cold for music and to sit with these songs until ready to pursue their own blue sky.
