Among venerable UK rock institutions, with Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull dispersing, perhaps only Deep Purple, Yes and Uriah Heep remain to uphold the tradition of quality, original progressive hard rock forged at the very start of a golden era for music at the end of the '60s and through the pivotal year of 1970. From these roots, with classic tracks such as “Gypsy,” “Bird of Prey,” and “Walking in Your Shadow,” Uriah Heep began their rise, reaching their most iconic works, Demons and Wizards, The Magician’s Birthday, and Sweet Freedom, all going gold in the US. Uriah Heep are known for their clever use of vocals in heavy metal and for their blend of Hammond organ and Mick’s signature wah-wah guitar, helping define their distinct sound. With 40 million records sold worldwide, the band notably became the first Western rock act to play live in Moscow in 1987 before 180,000 people.
