What if opera finally stepped out of its walls? With Carmen, the company Maurice et les autres reinvents Georges Bizet’s masterpiece as an immersive, lively, and deeply contemporary experience. There is no standard stage or red velvet: the show unfolds in public spaces along a route where the spectator becomes a traveler. Guided from one place to another, you cross through the work’s landscapes—the square, the tavern, the arena—as living tableaux. The music accompanies you, bodies brush past, glances are exchanged. You are no longer just watching the story: you are inside it. Because Carmen is much more than a famous opera. It is a story of freedom, desire, and violence, with striking relevance today. “She leaves him, he kills her”: behind the passion, a drama that resonates with contemporary issues. Performed by a troupe of actors, singers, and musicians, this traveling version blends theater, music, and performance in a collective, joyful, and committed spirit. Jeanne Desoubeaux’s direction transforms the space into a poetic and political playground, where each location becomes a set and each movement a dramaturgy.
