Inventor of the symphonic poem, Franz Liszt composed thirteen of them, including Les Préludes, inspired by Lamartine, which closes this program in a whirlwind of passion. Saint-Saëns followed in his footsteps with the famous Danse macabre, La Muse et le Poète (a tender dialogue between solo violin and cello), and the enchanting Rouet d'Omphale, depicting Omphale's victory over Hercules. Augusta Holmès, a friend of Saint-Saëns, also contributed to the repertoire with La Nuit et l'Amour, a masterpiece of French Romanticism.
