Billions of micro-organisms live inside and on the surface of our bodies. This collection, known as the microbiome, plays an essential role in digestion, the immune system and our health in general. During this talk, Prof. Paul Wilmes from the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine at the University of Luxembourg will explain the role of the microbiome in our health, as well as the influence of diet and lifestyle on its composition. Drawing on recent scientific studies, he will explore how interactions between the microbiome and diet can influence the onset of colorectal cancer and Parkinson’s disease, what the microbiome can reveal about the early stages of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s, and how lifestyle habits can help preserve a healthy microbiome.
