**Synopsis:** In feudal Japan, Oharu, daughter of the royal samurai Shinzaemon, begins a secret romance with Katsunosuke, a man of lower social class. After their relationship is discovered, Katsunosuke is executed, and Oharu and her family are banished from the kingdom. Impoverished and disgraced, Shinzaemon sells Oharu into prostitution. She spends years searching for love.
