In a musical adaptation by Karin Ospelt and Thomas Spieckermann.
Young Karlos loves Elisabeth, and she loves him too, but then his father marries his fiancée. Karlos cannot recover from this blow. Elisabeth, for her part, resigns herself to her unhappy marriage. This family tragedy turns into a state crisis because Karlos is not just a young man, but also the heir to the Spanish throne.
King Philip rules over the largest empire of the time and tries to secure it through his marriage to Elisabeth of Valois. However, many challenges arise: uprisings in the Netherlands, the Emperor in Vienna aiming to expand his empire, and the Turks besieging the West. Philip responds with an iron fist and will not yield anything to his enemies.
Marquis Posa, a childhood friend of Karlos, returns one day to the Spanish court and asks Karlos to go with him to the Netherlands, away from Spain and the court. But Karlos cannot leave Elisabeth. Posa perseveres and demands freedom of thought from King Philip.
Friedrich Schiller's play "Don Karlos" is considered one of the greatest masterpieces of world theatre and a prime example of the "drama of ideas" that remains relevant today.
After the successful staging of Brecht's "Life of Galileo", Oliver Vorwerk returns with this co-production to the TNL.
