In the darkness of Nazi prisons, women resistance fighters dared to sing about the reality of their incarceration. Using popular melodies of the time, they changed the lyrics—often with biting humor—to reflect their miserable conditions and collectively give themselves the courage to keep fighting. This multimedia exhibition is based on a collection of songs typed after the war by French resistance fighter Yvonne Oddon, upon her return from more than four years of internment and deportation in several Nazi prisons and camps. The exhibition also gives new life to these songs through performances by Catherine Harrison-Boisvert (voice) and Monica Han (piano), offering a fascinating glimpse into singing as a strategy of resistance in detention.
