A youthful work by Ernst Lubitsch, Carmen is a monumental adaptation of Prosper Mérimée's drama. Supported by the Berlin UFA studios, which aimed to compete with Hollywood through grand productions, the film highlights the dark actress Pola Negri in the title role, with whom the director would collaborate closely afterwards. The music, composed by Tobias Schwencke, is inspired by the themes of Georges Bizet's opera of the same name.
