Three rivers cross the municipality: the Alzette, the Eisch, and the Mamer. Historically, the Alzette often floods, especially near Rollingen and Mersch. During floods, it deposits silt that fertilizes the meadows, leading to abundant hay harvests. However, these floods sometimes occur during summer, causing damage. Observations about flooding date back to at least 1830. At the end of the 19th century, the arrival of Thomasmiel fertilizer changed how floods were seen. Photos of early 20th-century floods have been preserved, and in 2021, drones documented a major flood in detail. The fire brigade's mission is to help people during such disasters, and since the 1990s they have had more equipment, centralized to improve their response.
