Dido and Æneas is the first true English opera and the only one composed by Henry Purcell. Dido, queen of Carthage, falls in love with the exiled Trojan prince Æneas. Deceived by an evil sorceress, Æneas decides to leave for Italy, abandoning Dido, who dies in despair. Mixing comedy and tragedy, this opera is considered a masterpiece of the baroque repertoire. It will be performed by a cast selected through a public audition as part of a Discovery project for young opera singers.
