Why do we dream?
Dreams have fascinated humanity since time immemorial. But what do we actually know about them today? Why do we dream, and what role do dreams play in our psychological experience? This course provides an easily understandable introduction to the psychology and neuroscience of dreaming. Together, we examine the most important scientific theories about sleep and dreaming, the various sleep phases, the role of memory, as well as the possible functions of dreams according to the current state of research. Furthermore, the most significant historical approaches to dream interpretation are presented, especially the theories of Sigmund Freud and Carl Gustav Jung, to evaluate their influence on the development of psychology. Using numerous examples and current research findings, the course imparts a sound understanding of what dreams can reveal about the functioning of our brain and psyche, clearly distinguishing scientific insights from hypotheses and personal beliefs.
