Andrzej Wajda’s celebrated film The Conductor (1979) is a powerful story about artistic passion, ambition, jealousy and the price of art. At the heart of the story, a world-renowned Polish conductor returns from the United States to his homeland, where his presence rekindles old tensions and contributes to a crisis in a young couple’s marriage. Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 inspired Polish cellist and composer Michał Pepol to create an entirely new score for this Wajda classic. Written to mark the centenary of the director’s birth, this composition establishes a dialogue between Beethoven and Wajda’s images, combining classical sensibility with a contemporary musical language. The score will be performed live by Pepol & The People, a young string ensemble founded by Michał Pepol, with Karolina Wiśniewska and Mikołaj Marciniak on violin, and Michał Moiraliotis on viola.
