- History
The techniques of a siege are explained through the capture of Luxembourg. From 1681, Louis XIV’s troops blockaded the Fortress of Luxembourg. At Christmas 1683, the city was bombarded for several days. At the end of April 1684, Marshal de Créquy’s siege began. After six weeks of intense fighting, the Spanish garrison capitulated. Vauban drew lessons from this siege and reinforced the fortress on the surrounding plateaux.
