Italy, 1997. Eight-year-old Linda leaves Switzerland with her mother Eva to settle in Ferrara. There, she meets Azzurra and Marta, two sisters her age, and quickly becomes friends with them. Often left to their own devices, the three girls spend the summer playing, exploring and embarking on improvised adventures around their neighbourhood. Their eccentric babysitter Carlino becomes their accomplice and one of the few adults to give them genuine attention. Confronted with the fragilities of the adult world, they find sisterhood and a refuge in their friendship where they can fully experience childhood.
