The 'Librairie Française' closes its doors
After more than 45 years of activity, the Librairie Française in Luxembourg is closing its doors. A closure between the crisis in the book trade and questioning of commercial activity in the city center of the capital.
On the windows of the French Bookstore, you can read posters announcing the end of the lease and reductions ranging from -20 to -60%. But in fact, it is indeed a final closure. "We are not going to move," admits Madame Mersch, owner of the bookstore. "We have to close." A closure that is the result of a convergence of factors: work that dragged on, increased competition and "unbeatable" from Amazon, economic conditions that are not there.

“I extended the lease again about three years ago, but today that is no longer possible. We have been undergoing work in the city center since 2014. Today, the tram has arrived , the Hamilius center is finished, but the long-awaited dynamic is not at all present ”, strongly regrets Ms. Mersch, who had this bookstore opened 46 years ago with her now retired husband. “In 2017, my son took over the business with me. But he finally chose to open another business, outside of town, in a shopping center. ”
