Seven Methods of Killing Kylie Jenner (Jasmine Lee-Jones)
Cleo has holed up in her bedroom to write her dissertation on structural racism, when a tweet triggers her: "At 21, Kylie Jenner becomes the youngest self-made billionaire ever." But what’s self-made about inherited money and white privilege? Cleo fires off a series of anonymous tweets under the hashtag #kyliejennerfidead to express her frustration about how white women appropriate and benefit from black culture and stereotypes. Cleo’s best friend voices concerns about Cleo’s digital fantasies as the lines between the digital and IRL become blurred.
In this witty, fast-paced, darkly-comical play, Jasmine Lee-Jones picks up on current debates about black identity, beauty ideals, cultural appropriation, racism, queerness, and wokism among young people. The play questions perspectives, nuance, and the legitimacy of who can speak on these issues, while also staging public exposure of bodies. The performance includes associative visuals and movement that create tension around radical viewpoints. After the January 25th performance, the artistic team will host a post-show discussion.
