Questions of justice and guilt are central themes in Friedrich Dürrenmatt's comedy "Die Panne". The story follows Alfredo Traps, who must interrupt his journey because of a car breakdown. He finds refuge with a retired judge. Traps spends the evening with his host and his former, also retired, colleagues: a judge, a prosecutor, a defense attorney and an executioner. During dinner, the four elders explain that they reenact famous trials in their spare time. Lacking a defendant for the evening, they encourage Traps to take on the role, which he gladly accepts. Convinced of his own innocence, Traps soon finds himself increasingly cornered by the elders' cunning game.
