A practical 4-week course exploring color mixing, harmony, observation and atmosphere through guided exercises and color studies led by artist Alvira Ferreira. Color is one of the most expressive — and often most challenging — aspects of creating art. Over the years of my artistic practice and work in art restoration, color accuracy and observation have become central elements of my practice. In restoration work in particular, the slightest change in hue, temperature, saturation or value can completely alter the result, requiring an extremely well-trained eye for color mixing and harmony. This course is designed to help students better understand how colors truly interact, change, neutralize, harmonize and create atmosphere through hands-on experimentation and observation. Rather than relying on pre-mixed colors straight from the tube, students will learn to intentionally mix and control colors through practical exercises focused on harmony, temperature, value, saturation and atmosphere, using a limited palette. Although the course demonstrations and exercises primarily use paint, the principles covered apply to different artistic techniques, including painting, colored pencils, pastels, illustration, mixed media, and much more. The topics covered throughout the course include: color mixing and color relationships primary, secondary and complementary colors the temperature of warm and cool colors harmony, contrast and balance saturation and muted colors colored shadows and reflected light color matching from observation creating atmosphere through palette choices working with limited palettes Suitable for both beginner and intermediate artists. Course Program Lesson 3 Color Matching and Observation Learning to observe and accurately mix colors from real-world objects and references. Students will develop their ability to identify subtle variations in color, values and temperature relationships through observation-based exercises.
